VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Central Regional Science Olympiad competition
When: Saturday 13 January 2018

Hello STEM Education Council,

I am the Central Regional Director of Florida Science Olympiad and we are hosting the Central Regional Science Olympiad competition at Lake Nona High School on Saturday, January 13 from 7:00 am until 4:00 pm. This event has over 50 teams of 15 middle and high school students from around Central Florida competing in 46 different STEM events. We need event supervisors and judges for some of our events.  Event supervisors organize, plan, and run the event while judges assist on the day of competition.

The competition runs with 6 rotations of students competing according to the attached schedule so, we need volunteers for the entire day. We need help with the following events:

 ·         Experimental Design (students must design an experiment using the parameters and materials provided by the event supervisor)
·         Hovercraft (students design a model hovercraft to complete specific tasks on a track)
·         Material Science (students test on topics related to polymers and chemical properties of materials)
·         Thermodynamics (students test on properties of thermodynamics and build a device to keep in the heat)
·         Battery Buggy (students test a pre-built “battery buggy” in a race)
·         Write It Do It (students have to write directions for their partner to build an exact replica of a given model)
·         Mission Possible (students build a Rube Goldberg type device to complete specific energy transfers)

Volunteers will get a t-shirt and a hot lunch from Little Greek. But, they best part is that volunteers will get to lead activities for STEM minded youth! The excitement of the competition is something to enjoy!

 Volunteers can sign up at:

I appreciate you sharing this with anyone who might be interested. Please contact me for more information.

[stem]  noun   1. Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics, is the key to our future careers. STEM encompasses almost everything in our daily lives. How we eat, communicate; solve problems, where we live, virtually all of the things we are exposed to, have been developed with a foundation of STEM knowledge. Think of the games we play after school: WII, Hlo, XBOX, how were these created? Will you be the creator of the Next Big Thing?
